The Municipality of Sidon held a ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the water barrier which will take in the bulk of the waste mountain through a donation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia worth U.S. $ 20 million. Former Prime Minister, Mr. Fuad Saniora, the Minister of Environment Mr. Nazem Khoury, the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Ghazi Aridi, the Saudi ambassador in Lebanon Mr. Ali bin Awwad Asiri, President of the Council for Development and Reconstruction, Eng. Nabil El-Jisr, and the mayor of Saida, Mr. Mohammed Al Saudi participated in the ceremony which was held in the vicinity of the waste treatment plant. Also attending the ceremony were the representative of the Speaker of Parliament Mr. Nabih Berri, Brigadier Mohammed Srour and a host of political, social and economic officials, and mayors of the Union of Municipalities of Sidon and Zahrani and representatives of the diplomatic, consular, official bodies and other officials. The mayor of Saida, Mohammed Al Saudi pointed out that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabica will finance the project. Minister Al-Khoury affirmed that he will closely attend the execution of this project. For his part, the President of the Council considered that the project is the beginning of managing the seafront of the city of Sidon. He explained that the covered space between the water barrier and the beach will be an opportunity for the city to address these two critical files on an environmental level. Part of this space will accommodate as much as possible components of the mountain of waste.
